- 1. Take advantage of preview hours. Most auctions
open hours or days before a sale to give you time to sift through
box lots and view table items
-
- 2. Double-check contents before bidding. If you see
something you want in a box lot or in a grouping of items, it
could get moved by sale time
-
- 3. Do not bid against yourself or your mate. It is
not uncommon to see novices bid against themselves, or for couples
to bid against each other
-
- 4. Nod "no" when dropping out of the bidding.
If you are in the heat of bidding then decide to drop out, nodding
quickens the end of that sale
-
- 5. Handle fragile items with care. If you break anything
at a consignment auction, it is the consignor who loses, not
the auction house
-
- 6. Read up on reproduction furniture and collectibles.
Reproductions are common and the wise auction goer will learn
how to tell the difference
-
- 7. Don't lose your bidding number. Purchases made
with your number are your responsibility. If you lose it, get
a new number immediately
-
- 8. Pre-determine how much you want to spend on items.
In the heat of bidding, you can get carried away and exceed your
budget
-
- 9. Big item, small car? Ask about delivery service.
Many auctions will arrange for regional delivery of larger furniture
and appliances
-
- 10. Things to sell? Try a consignment sale. Many auctioneers
accept consignments from individuals, charging a commission on
eveything sold
