Top 10 Tips For Buyers

Auctions - Flea Markets - Shows - Stores & Markets
Auctions

1. Take advantage of preview hours. Most auctions open hours or days before a sale to give you time to sift through box lots and view table items

2. Double-check contents before bidding. If you see something you want in a box lot or in a grouping of items, it could get moved by sale time

3. Do not bid against yourself or your mate. It is not uncommon to see novices bid against themselves, or for couples to bid against each other

4. Nod "no" when dropping out of the bidding. If you are in the heat of bidding then decide to drop out, nodding quickens the end of that sale

5. Handle fragile items with care. If you break anything at a consignment auction, it is the consignor who loses, not the auction house

6. Read up on reproduction furniture and collectibles. Reproductions are common and the wise auction goer will learn how to tell the difference

7. Don't lose your bidding number. Purchases made with your number are your responsibility. If you lose it, get a new number immediately

8. Pre-determine how much you want to spend on items. In the heat of bidding, you can get carried away and exceed your budget

9. Big item, small car? Ask about delivery service. Many auctions will arrange for regional delivery of larger furniture and appliances

10. Things to sell? Try a consignment sale. Many auctioneers accept consignments from individuals, charging a commission on eveything sold
