The 20th Annual Port Perry Winter Antiques and Nostalgia Show and Sale kicked of the official antiquing season in Port Perry on February 4 and 5, 2017, at the Scugog Community Centre.
A large waiting crowd were restless to get started on opening day and many described the first few hours as a whirlwind of vent-up antique fever. The 27 vendors provided a wide variety of antiques and nostalgic items and good sales were reported.
Organizers had challenged the vendors to bring and proudly display a pre-1867 item for the Visitor’s Treasure Hunt with the local historical society providing a “draw prize” for those who could spot and describe five early Canadian items from the dealers’ booths.
Pre-1867 items included lamps, photos, coins, tokens, bottles, dolls and china. The local museum and archives also joined in this educational game by displaying the 1866-1871 Fenian Raid cap of local organizer T. C. Foreman and a well-preserved replica of the 1891 excursion steamer The Crandella that ran from Lindsay to Lake Scugog as well as Bobcaygeon and Fenelon Falls.
All proceeds from the show support the work of the Lake Scugog Historical Society. The volunteers were very happy with the turnout, the quality and variety of items displayed by the dealers and the relaxing, fun atmosphere of this small 20-year-old show that greets each new year in this historic lakefront community. This year was also significant because of 150th anniversary of Canada becoming a country and it was welcomed with enthusiasm and pride.
